AirTag vs Tracker Card: The Best Way to Track Your Wallet
Updated October 2026. We sell the Waypoint Tracker Card, so we're not neutral. Specs for other products are from their makers and reviews, and can change.
Losing a wallet is miserable: cards to cancel, an ID to replace, cash gone. A Bluetooth tracker lets you find it on a map or make it ring. The obvious choice is an AirTag, but it isn't always the best fit for a wallet, especially a slim one. Here's how AirTags compare with card-shaped trackers.
How wallet trackers work
Trackers like these don't have GPS or a SIM card. They send out a Bluetooth signal that nearby phones pick up anonymously and report to a network: Apple's Find My for iPhones, or Google's Find Hub for Android. You then see the last reported location in the app. The more phones nearby, the better it works, which is why these big networks matter.
AirTag in a wallet: the pros and cons
Apple's AirTag 2 launched in January 2026 at $29, or about $99 for a 4-pack.
- Good: excellent on iPhone, with Precision Finding that points you to it with an arrow on newer iPhones. Apple says the second generation's range for that is about 1.5x better, and the speaker is louder.
- Good: a replaceable coin battery that lasts around a year.
- Problem for wallets: it's a disc about 1.26 inches across and 0.31 inches (8 mm) thick. That's roughly ten credit cards thick, so it creates a lump in a leather wallet and won't fit between the plates of most slim metal wallets without a holder.
- Problem for Android users: it's built for Apple's Find My network and iPhone.
Card trackers
Card trackers put the same idea into the shape of a credit card, so they slide into a card slot, between wallet plates, or into a bag pocket or luggage tag. Several companies make them, including Chipolo, Pebblebee and wallet brands such as Ekster and Ridge, as well as ours.
- Good: they fit in a wallet like another card, and slip into a backpack pocket, passport holder or luggage tag without adding bulk.
- Good: many now work with either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, so they suit iPhone and Android users.
- Trade-off: most don't have the ultra-wideband chip that powers Apple's Precision Finding arrow, so you rely on the map and the ringer for the last few feet.
- Trade-off: batteries differ. Some are sealed with a battery meant to last a set time; others are rechargeable, using wireless charging or a special cable.
Waypoint Tracker Card
Our Waypoint Tracker Card is $24, or $79 for a 4-pack, enough for your wallet, a backpack, a laptop bag and a suitcase.
- 1.77 mm thick and credit-card size, so it fits between the plates of our wallets and in most card slots
- Works with Apple Find My (iPhone) or Google Find Hub (Android), with no extra app needed
- Charges on any Qi wireless charger, with no coin battery to replace
- IP68 dust and water resistance
- 90 dB alert to help you find it nearby
- No subscription
Note: like any tracker, keep it where its signal can get out. In a fully closed metal case the signal can be weaker, so test it once in the app after you set it up.

Which should you get?
- Get a card tracker for your wallet, especially a slim or metal one, and for bags, luggage, laptop sleeves and passport holders. It slides into a pocket or luggage tag without a bulge, and many work with Android as well as iPhone.
- Get an AirTag if you use an iPhone and the Precision Finding arrow matters most to you, or you'd rather swap a coin battery once a year than recharge.
- Already own AirTags? Keep them where they are and add a card tracker to your wallet, where an AirTag doesn't fit well.
Questions
Will an AirTag fit in a slim wallet?
Usually not without a holder. At 8 mm thick it's about ten credit cards deep.
Can I use a tracker card with an Android phone?
Yes, if it supports Google's Find Hub. The Waypoint does.
Will a metal wallet block my tracker?
Metal can weaken Bluetooth signals, so test yours in the app after setup to see how it performs in your wallet.
Can someone use a tracker to follow me?
Apple and Google both alert phone users if an unknown tracker seems to be traveling with them, to discourage misuse.
